I have always had an avid interest in food and cooking since I was about 12 years old, Born in the tropical island of Sri Lanka, I grew up eating whole foods – garden fresh vegetables, fruits, fish from the Indian Ocean along with rice grown in local paddy fields.
Traditional curries native to her country were flavoured with spices like coriander, cumin, cinnamon, turmeric, chilies, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon and curry leaves which combined subtly with the sweetness of coconut. The traditions of ancient Ayurvedic healing and cooking were deeply ingrained in me by my mom from an early age.
Later on moving to England and Canada and through numerous travels, I began to explore other Global cuisines like Indian, Indonesian, Thai, Mediterranean, and Mexican which have all become my favourites!
For over 20 years I have followed my passion continuing to learn and share with others my diverse cooking skills combined with my research of proper dietary principles through cooking classes in Delta and Vancouver, BC.
In more recent years, having noticed the effects of genetic tendencies along with poor diet or life style on friends and family. I dived into the field of Nutrition to find clues to prevent common conditions like diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure –which also ran in my own family.
As a result, I recently trained to be a certified Diabetic Educator and Coach through the University of Victoria Self-Management Programs in order to assist others seeking help with Diabetes Management.
I am also the author of two cook books:
- “Ethnic Pleasures” with recipes from Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia and Thailand published in 2004, which supported a house-building project for Tsunami victims in Sri Lanka.
- “Healthy-licious Eating” published in 2015 with quick and easy recipes to add more plant-based foods in our diet with vegan and gluten-free recipes.
